Neil Gaiman is a British author whose extraordinary imagination has produced some of the most celebrated and genre-defying fiction of the past forty years. His work spans novels, graphic novels, short stories, children's books, film, and television — and in every medium, he brings a storyteller's instinct, a poet's language, and a... fascination with myth, folklore, and the strange corners of the human experience. Born in Portchester, Hampshire in 1960, Gaiman grew up in a Jewish family and was an avid reader from childhood. He worked as a journalist before publishing his first major work, the graphic novel series The Sandman, which ran from 1989 to 1996 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic book series ever created. The Sandman established Gaiman as a literary figure who transcended the boundaries of comics, and it remains a landmark of the medium. His novels include American Gods — a modern myth about old-world deities struggling to survive in contemporary America — which won the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards and was adapted into a television series. Neverwhere reimagines the London Underground as a fantastical realm beneath the city. Stardust is a fairy tale for adults. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a dark, luminous novella about childhood memory. His children's books are equally acclaimed. Coraline — about a girl who discovers a sinister "other" version of her home — won the Hugo Award and was adapted into a beloved animated film. The Graveyard Book, about a boy raised by ghosts in a cemetery, won both the Carnegie Medal and the Newbery Medal. Gaiman has also written for film (the screenplay for Beowulf), television (the acclaimed adaptations of Good Omens, co-written with Terry Pratchett, and The Sandman for Netflix), and radio. The audiobook editions of Gaiman's works are exceptional. He is himself a gifted narrator, and his readings of his own books — including The Graveyard Book and Norse Mythology — are definitive.
