Ngaio Marsh

Ngaio Marsh was a New Zealand crime fiction author and theatre director who is one of the four "Queens of Crime" alongside Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Margery Allingham. Her thirty-two Roderick Alleyn detective novels, published over nearly fifty years, are among the finest achievements of the golden age of detective fiction. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1895, Marsh studied painting at Canterbury College School of Art and worked as an actress and journalist before turning to writing. She spent much of her adult life moving between New Zealand and England, and her novels reflect both worlds. A Man Lay Dead (1934) introduced Chief Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard — urbane, intelligent, the younger son of a baroness, and married to the painter Agatha Troy. The series ran to thirty-two novels, including Enter a Murderer, Artists in Crime, Vintage Murder, Death in a White Tie, Overture to Death, Surfeit of Lampreys, Died in the Wool, Final Curtain, Opening Night, Scales of Justice, and many more. Marsh's detective fiction is distinguished by her vivid characterisation, her knowledge of the theatre (many of her novels are set in theatrical or artistic worlds), her New Zealand settings, and the urbane wit of her detective. She wrote classic puzzles with the literary quality of a novelist who cared deeply about character and setting. Beyond her writing, Marsh was one of the most significant figures in New Zealand theatre, directing Shakespeare and other productions that helped establish a national theatrical tradition. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1966. Marsh died in 1982, but her Roderick Alleyn novels remain in print and continue to find new readers.
