NoViolet Bulawayo

NoViolet Bulawayo is a Zimbabwean author whose novels have established her as one of the most important and original African writers of her generation — a fearless storyteller whose work combines political urgency with extraordinary literary ambition. Born Elizabeth Zandile Tshele in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe in 1981, Bulawayo moved to the United States at eighteen. She studied at Texas State University, Kalamazoo College, and Cornell University, where she earned her MFA. She adopted her pen name in honour of her mother, NoViolet, and her hometown of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city. We Need New Names (2013), her debut novel, follows Darling, a girl growing up in a shantytown in Zimbabwe who emigrates to America. The novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, making Bulawayo the first Zimbabwean and one of the youngest writers to be shortlisted. Its opening section — set in a community called Paradise that is anything but — is a masterpiece of voice and perspective. Glory (2022) is a bold, allegorical novel that reimagines the fall of Robert Mugabe's regime through animal characters in a fictional country called Jidada. The novel draws on Orwellian tradition while being entirely its own creation — savage, funny, heartbreaking, and politically devastating. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022.
