Pablo Vierci is a Uruguayan author, journalist and screenwriter. He is best known for his long friendship with the survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash, one of the most remarkable survival stories in history, in which members of a Uruguayan rugby team survived seventy-two days in the Andes mountains after their plane crashed, ultimately resorting to eating the bodies of the dead to stay alive.
I Had to Survive is Vierci's account of the disaster and its aftermath, co-authored with Roberto Canessa, one of the two survivors who undertook the extraordinary trek through the Andes to find rescue. The book tells Canessa's story and how the experience shaped the rest of his life, including his career as a paediatric cardiologist who saves children's lives.
Available as both a book and an audiobook, I Had to Survive offers extraordinary listening and reading — a testament to human endurance, courage and the will to live that ranks among the most powerful survival narratives ever told.
