Pat Barker is one of Britain's most acclaimed novelists, known for her unflinching exploration of war, trauma, memory, and working-class life. Born in Thornaby-on-Tees in 1943, she was raised by her grandmother in a working-class community in the industrial north-east of England. She studied at the London School of Economics and later... taught history and politics. Barker's early novels, including Union Street and Blow Your House Down, drew on the lives of working-class women in northern England. Her reputation was transformed by the Regeneration Trilogy — Regeneration, The Eye in the Door, and The Ghost Road — which explored the psychological aftermath of World War I through the stories of soldiers treated by the real-life psychiatrist W.H.R. Rivers. The Ghost Road won the Booker Prize in 1995. She has continued to explore themes of conflict and its human cost in novels including Another World, Life Class, and the Women of Troy duology. Barker was made a CBE in 2000 and a Dame in 2021 for services to literature. Her audiobooks and books are admired for their psychological depth, moral complexity, and the precision of her prose.
