Patrick O'Brian was a British novelist and translator who wrote the Aubrey-Maturin series — twenty completed novels following Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr Stephen Maturin through the Napoleonic Wars. Born Richard Patrick Russ in 1914, he is widely regarded as the greatest writer of historical naval fiction. His body of work, beginning with Master and Commander, is celebrated for its extraordinary historical authenticity, its literary quality, and the deep, complex friendship at its heart. The series has been compared to the finest literary fiction and inspired a feature film starring Russell Crowe. O'Brian was also an acclaimed translator of French literature. O'Brian died in 2000. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers the finest naval historical fiction ever written — a twenty-volume masterpiece of friendship, seamanship, and the age of sail.
