Peter Lovesey is a British crime fiction author who is one of the most respected and prolific writers in the genre, with a career spanning over five decades. His novels combine meticulous historical research, ingenious plotting, and dry wit, and he has been honoured with virtually every major crime writing award. Born in Whitton,... Middlesex in 1936, Lovesey studied at the University of Reading and served in the Royal Air Force before becoming a lecturer in English. His first novel was written in response to a competition for a crime novel set in the Victorian era — and he won. Wobble to Death (1970) was that debut, introducing Sergeant Cribb, a Victorian detective who investigates crimes in the colourful world of late nineteenth-century London. The Sergeant Cribb series ran to eight novels and was adapted into a television series by Granada. His Peter Diamond series, set in Bath, became his most enduring creation. Beginning with The Last Detective (1991), the series follows the irascible, technophobic, and thoroughly human Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond as he investigates murders in and around the city. The series spans over twenty novels, including The Vault, Diamond Dust, The House Sitter, Skeleton Hill, Cop to Corpse, Down Among the Dead Men, and many more. A Case of Spirits is among his earlier works exploring Victorian crime. Lovesey has won the CWA Gold Dagger, the CWA Silver Dagger, the CWA Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement, and the Cartier Diamond Dagger.
