Philip Pullman is one of the most important and acclaimed British authors of the past fifty years, best known for His Dark Materials — a trilogy of novels that ranks among the greatest works of imaginative fiction ever written. Born in Norwich in 1946, Pullman spent parts of his childhood in Zimbabwe and Australia before settling in England. He studied English at Exeter College, Oxford, and spent many years as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer. His experiences as a storyteller in the classroom profoundly influenced his approach to fiction — he believes passionately in the power of narrative and has little patience for literary theory that dismisses the importance of a good story. His Dark Materials — comprising Northern Lights (published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass — was published between 1995 and 2000. The trilogy follows Lyra Belacqua, a fierce, curious girl in a parallel Oxford where every person has a visible animal companion called a daemon, on a journey across multiple worlds that ultimately confronts the nature of consciousness, authority, and what it means to grow up. The series won the Carnegie Medal, the Whitbread Book of the Year (the first children's book to do so), and has sold over seventeen million copies worldwide. The Book of Dust — a companion trilogy comprising La Belle Sauvage (2017), The Secret Commonwealth (2019), and the forthcoming third volume — expands and deepens the world of His Dark Materials, following Lyra at different stages of her life. Pullman has also written numerous other novels, including the Sally Lockhart quartet, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, and retellings of fairy tales. He was knighted in 2019 for services to literature. The audiobook editions of His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust have been celebrated, with full-cast productions and single-narrator editions both finding enthusiastic audiences.
