Richard Henry Dana Jr (1815-1882) was an American lawyer, politician and author best known for his memoir Two Years Before the Mast, a classic account of life aboard a merchant sailing ship. Published in 1840, the book drew on Dana's own experience of sailing from Boston around Cape Horn to California, and its vivid descriptions of the hardships, beauty and adventure of life at sea made it an instant classic. Dana's writing helped expose the brutal treatment of ordinary sailors and contributed to maritime reform. His books and audiobooks continue to captivate readers and listeners with their timeless account of adventure on the open ocean.
