Sara Cox is a British broadcaster, DJ, and author whose warm, funny personality has made her a beloved fixture of British radio and television for over twenty-five years. Her novel Thrown marked her successful transition from broadcasting to fiction.
Born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1974, Cox grew up on a farm in Little Lever before beginning her broadcasting career as a teenager. She became one of the youngest presenters on Radio 1, hosting the breakfast show and various other programmes, and later moved to Radio 2, where she presents the drivetime show.
Cox has presented numerous television programmes, including the dating show Love in the Countryside and various entertainment and music shows.
Thrown (2024) is her debut novel — a warm, funny, and surprisingly moving story set in a pottery class, following a group of people from different walks of life who come together to learn the art of throwing pots and find their lives changing in unexpected ways. The novel was praised for its warmth, its humour, and its compassionate portrayal of a diverse group of characters navigating love, loss, and the therapeutic power of making things with your hands.
Cox writes with the warmth and accessibility of a natural communicator, and her background in broadcasting gives her an instinctive understanding of voice, timing, and the art of making people feel at ease. Her characters are recognisable, her humour is gentle but sharp, and her debut suggests a genuine talent for fiction.
The audiobook edition of Thrown, read by Cox herself, is warm and engaging — her broadcasting voice is perfectly suited to storytelling. Her book and audiobook are ideal for anyone who loves warm, funny fiction about ordinary people finding community and purpose in unexpected places.
