Stella Rimington is a British author and former intelligence officer who served as the Director General of MI5 from 1992 to 1996, the first woman to hold the post and the first DG whose name was publicly announced. Born in 1935 in London, she studied English at the University of Edinburgh and joined MI5 in 1969, rising through the ranks over a twenty-seven-year career that included counter-espionage, counter-subversion, and counter-terrorism.
After retiring from MI5, Rimington published her memoir Open Secret and then turned to fiction, writing a series of spy thrillers featuring Liz Carlyle, an MI5 intelligence officer. The series, beginning with At Risk, draws on Rimington's firsthand knowledge of intelligence operations, surveillance, and the moral complexities of protecting national security. The novels have been praised for their authenticity and their sophisticated understanding of how intelligence agencies actually work.
Rimington was appointed CB in 1996 and DCB in the same year. Her audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers spy fiction with the authority that only a former spy chief can provide — grounded, intelligent thrillers that illuminate the real world of intelligence without the glamour or gadgets of fictional counterparts.
