Stephen King is, by almost any measure, the most successful and influential horror and thriller writer of all time. His name is synonymous with the genre he has... dominated and redefined. Born in Portland, Maine in 1947, King was raised by his mother after his father left the family when Stephen was two. He showed an early passion for writing and began submitting stories to magazines as a teenager. After studying English at the University of Maine, he worked as a teacher while writing in his spare time. His wife, the novelist Tabitha King, famously rescued the manuscript of Carrie from the bin — and when it was published in 1974, it launched one of the most extraordinary literary careers in history.
