Stephen Leather is a British thriller writer and former journalist whose action-packed novels have sold millions of copies and made him one of the bestselling authors on the Kindle platform. His work draws on his years as an international journalist to create authentic, fast-paced stories of espionage, organised crime, and special forces... operations. Born in Manchester in 1956, Leather attended Manchester Grammar School and studied Biochemistry at Bath University before embarking on a career in journalism. He worked for over a decade on newspapers including The Times, the Daily Mail, and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong — experience that gave him an insider's knowledge of crime, policing, and the murky world of international intelligence. His first novel, Pay Off, was published in 1987, and he has since written over forty books. The Dan "Spider" Shepherd series is his best-known work, following a former SAS soldier who becomes an undercover operative for a specialist police unit. The Jack Nightingale series took a different direction, featuring a supernatural detective investigating occult crimes. The Chinaman was adapted into the 2017 film The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. In 2011, Leather was the second bestselling UK author on Kindle worldwide, beaten only by Lee Child, demonstrating his massive commercial appeal in the digital age.
