Tim Sullivan

Tim Sullivan is a British crime writer, screenwriter, and director whose DS Cross mystery series has become one of the most popular and distinctive crime fiction series in the UK, selling over half a million copies worldwide. His detective protagonist — the brilliantly persistent, autistic DS George Cross — has won readers over with his unique perspective and relentless dedication to solving cases. Sullivan had an accomplished career in film and television before turning to crime fiction. He has worked on major feature films including the fourth Shrek, Flushed Away, Letters to Juliet, A Handful of Dust, and Jack and Sarah, bringing a storyteller's instinct for character and pacing to his novels. The DS Cross series, set in Bristol, follows Detective Sergeant George Cross, an autistic detective whose logical mind, extraordinary attention to detail, and refusal to engage in social niceties make him both a brilliant investigator and a challenging colleague. The series began with The Dentist (2020) and The Cyclist (2020), and has continued with The Patient, The Politician, The Monk, The Teacher, The Bookseller, The Basket Case, and The Tailor, each named for a key figure in the case. What makes the series distinctive is Sullivan's portrayal of Cross himself — autistic characters in crime fiction are not new, but Cross is drawn with nuance, specificity, and respect. His autism is not a superpower or a quirk; it is a fundamental part of who he is, shaping how he sees the world and solves cases. Sullivan writes Cross with understanding and without sentimentality, creating one of the most memorable detectives in contemporary British crime fiction. The audiobook editions of Sullivan's DS Cross novels are excellent, with narration that captures Cross's distinctive voice and the procedural tension of the investigations. His books and audiobooks are essential for crime fiction fans looking for a compelling detective who sees the world — and the crimes he investigates — differently from everyone else.
