Timothy Snyder is an American historian and author who is the Levin Professor of History at Yale University, specialising in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, the Holocaust, and modern authoritarianism. He speaks five European languages and reads ten. Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning examines the Holocaust... through a new lens, arguing that the destruction of state institutions was the precondition for mass murder and drawing urgent lessons for the present.
