Toni Morrison (1931–2019) was an American novelist and Nobel Prize laureate who is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Her novels, including Beloved (which won the Pulitzer Prize), Song of Solomon, Sula, and The Bluest Eye, explore the African American experience with lyrical prose, moral complexity, and unforgettable storytelling. Morrison's work transformed American literature and earned her the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993. A Mercy is set in seventeenth-century America and examines the origins of slavery and racial identity. Her audiobooks and books are among the most important works in the English language.
