Torrey Peters
Author
Torrey Peters is an American author whose debut novel was one of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed literary debuts of 2021, bringing a trans perspective to mainstream literary fiction with intelligence, humour, and fearless honesty. Peters studied at the University of Iowa and earned her MFA at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.... Before Detransition, Baby, she self-published novellas including Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and The Masker through her website, building a dedicated readership in the trans literary community. Detransition, Baby (2021) tells the story of three women — Reese, a trans woman who wants to be a mother; Ames, who has detransitioned after living as a trans woman named Amy; and Katrina, Ames's cisgender boss who becomes pregnant with his child. When Ames proposes that the three of them raise the baby together, the novel becomes a sharp, funny, deeply human exploration of parenthood, gender, desire, and what makes a family. The novel was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction — making Peters the first openly trans woman to be nominated — and was a New York Times bestseller. It was widely praised for treating its trans characters as complex, flawed, fully realised human beings rather than symbols or victims. Peters writes with wit, intelligence, and a refusal to simplify or sentimentalise. Her characters are messy, contradictory, and deeply compelling. The audiobook edition of Detransition, Baby is an engaging, thought-provoking listen. Peters's books and audiobooks are essential for readers who love contemporary literary fiction that pushes boundaries while telling genuinely compelling human stories. Read more Show less
