Tracy Chevalier is an American-British historical novelist known for her ability to find compelling stories in overlooked corners of history and art. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1962, she studied English at Oberlin College in Ohio and moved to England in 1984, where she earned an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. She has lived in London ever since and became a British citizen.
Chevalier's breakthrough novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, inspired by the Vermeer painting, became an international bestseller selling over five million copies and was adapted into a major film. Her subsequent novels — including Falling Angels, The Lady and the Unicorn, Remarkable Creatures, At the Edge of the Orchard, A Single Thread, and The Glassmaker — each take a work of art, a craft, or a moment in history as their starting point and build richly imagined stories around them. The Glassmaker follows a family of Murano glassmakers across five centuries of Venetian history.
Her fiction is characterised by meticulous research, vivid sense of place, and an ability to bring historical women's lives to the page. Her audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers beautifully crafted historical fiction where art and life intertwine.
