Vera Morris is a British crime fiction author who turned to writing after retiring from a career as a science teacher and secondary school headteacher in Oxfordshire. She studied Zoology at university and set her detective series on the Suffolk coast where she grew up in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The Anglian Detective Agency... series follows a group of investigators solving crimes and murders along the Suffolk coast in the 1970s. Death by the Sea, the sixth in the series, is set in Thorpeness in 1973, where a retired judge's quiet life on the Suffolk coast is shattered by murder. Morris's fiction combines cosy mystery charm with a vivid evocation of the East Anglian landscape and a period setting that captures a particular moment in British life.
