William Boyd is a British author whose elegant, ambitious novels span the twentieth century and beyond, exploring identity, deception, the passage of time, and the quiet dramas of individual lives set against the sweep of history. He is one of the most respected literary novelists of his generation and a master of the long-form... narrative. Born in Accra, Ghana in 1952, Boyd grew up in West Africa and was educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland and the University of Glasgow, where he studied English Literature. He went on to earn a PhD at Jesus College, Oxford, and lectured in English Literature at St Hilda's College before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, A Good Man in Africa, won the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Somerset Maugham Award. An Ice-Cream War (1982), set in East Africa during the First World War, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. These early novels established Boyd's signature combination of literary sophistication, wry humour, and richly imagined historical settings. Any Human Heart, published in 2002, is widely considered his masterpiece. The novel takes the form of the intimate journals of Logan Mountstuart, an everyman of the twentieth century whose life intersects with historical figures from the Duke of Windsor to Ian Fleming to Virginia Woolf. The book was adapted into a Channel 4 television series and is a magnificent exploration of how a single life can encompass triumph, failure, love, and loss across the tumult of an entire century. Boyd's other novels include Restless, Ordinary Thunderstorms, Waiting for Sunrise, Sweet Caress, and Love is Blind. He has also written screenplays, short stories, and was commissioned to write a James Bond novel, Solo. The audiobook editions of Boyd's novels are excellent, with narrators delivering the literary prose and period atmospheres that characterise his work with skill and sensitivity. Any Human Heart is a particularly rewarding listen. William Boyd lives in London and southwest France.
