William Emms was a British playwright and television writer who wrote the Doctor Who serial Galaxy 4, originally broadcast in 1966. This TV soundtrack preserves the audio from the original broadcast, featuring the First Doctor as played by William Hartnell, in an adventure set on a dying planet where the Doctor and his companions must navigate between two warring alien races. Galaxy 4 was part of Doctor Who's third season and is notable for its exploration of the theme that appearances can be deceiving, as the seemingly beautiful aliens prove to be the aggressors while the outwardly monstrous ones are peaceful. Much of the original video footage of Galaxy 4 was lost as part of the BBC's programme of wiping older recordings, making this audio version an important historical document that preserves a chapter of Doctor Who history that would otherwise be inaccessible. The soundtrack allows listeners to experience a piece of classic Doctor Who through the original performances, sound design and music that brought this early adventure to life.
