Yanis Varoufakis
Author
Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek-Australian economist, academic, politician, and author who became one of the most prominent and controversial figures in European politics during the Greek debt crisis. His books combine rigorous economic analysis with personal narrative, political passion, and a gift for making complex economic ideas... accessible to a wide audience. Born in Athens in 1961, Varoufakis studied mathematics at the University of Essex and economics at the University of Birmingham and the University of East Anglia. He has held academic positions at universities in the UK, Australia, the United States, and Greece. In January 2015, he was appointed Finance Minister of Greece by the newly elected Syriza government, tasked with negotiating the country's debt crisis with the European institutions. His six months in office — marked by dramatic confrontations with European finance ministers, the IMF, and the European Central Bank — made him an international figure and a lightning rod for debates about austerity, democracy, and the future of Europe. Adults in the Room (2017) is his account of those six months — a detailed, passionate, and often enraging insider's account of how European institutions handled the Greek crisis. The Weak Suffer What They Must? and And the Weak Suffer What They Must? explored the deeper history of European economic policy. Talking to My Daughter About the Economy was his accessible introduction to economics. Another Now (2020) imagined an alternative economic system. Technofeudalism (2023) argued that capitalism has been replaced by a new form of feudalism controlled by big tech. Varoufakis writes with the analytical rigour of an economist and the narrative drive of a political memoirist. The audiobook editions of Varoufakis's books are compelling and accessible. His books and audiobooks are essential for anyone interested in economics, European politics, and the question of who really holds power in the modern world. Read more Show less
