Bahni Turpin

Bahni Turpin is one of the most acclaimed audiobook narrators working today, with hundreds of titles to her credit and a reputation for performances of extraordinary depth and range. She has won multiple Audie Awards, including Audiobook of the Year, and has been recognised with dozens of AudioFile Earphones Awards over her career. Based in Los Angeles, Turpin is a trained actress with experience in theatre, film, and television. But it is in audiobook narration that she has made her greatest impact. Her narration of Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give became a cultural phenomenon, introducing millions of listeners to a story that defined a generation. She also narrated Thomas's follow-up, On the Come Up. Turpin's vocal range is remarkable. She can voice characters across age, gender, accent, and emotional register with a naturalness that makes listeners forget they are hearing a single performer. Her work spans literary fiction, young adult, memoir, and non-fiction, and she is particularly celebrated for her narration of stories by and about Black women and communities. Among her most praised narrations are The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. Each of these performances demonstrates her ability to hold emotional complexity — anger, tenderness, grief, and hope — simultaneously, without ever tipping into melodrama. For listeners who believe that a great narrator can transform a great book into something even more powerful, Bahni Turpin is essential listening.
