Benedict Cumberbatch CBE is one of the most recognisable British actors of his generation, known worldwide for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock and as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Born in London, he was educated at Harrow and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art... (LAMDA). Cumberbatch's career spans an extraordinary range. On screen, he has played Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (earning an Oscar nomination), Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, Smaug and the Necromancer in The Hobbit trilogy, and Thomas Edison in The Current War. On television, beyond Sherlock, he has appeared in Patrick Melrose (for which he won an Emmy nomination) and The Hollow Crown. On stage, his Hamlet at the Barbican in 2015 was one of the fastest-selling productions in London theatre history. He has also appeared in Hedda Gabler and Frankenstein at the National Theatre, in which he alternated the roles of the Creature and Victor Frankenstein with Jonny Lee Miller. As an audiobook narrator, Cumberbatch brings the same vocal precision and magnetic intensity that characterises his screen work.
