Sir John Betjeman was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who served as Poet Laureate from 1972 until his death in 1984. Born in London in 1906, he was one of the most popular English poets of the twentieth century, with collections including A Few Late Chrysanthemums and High and Low. He was also a passionate campaigner for the preservation of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and was instrumental in saving St Pancras station from demolition. He was knighted in 1969.
