Throughout, All The Names Given is punctuated with [Caption Poems] partially inspired by Deaf sound artist Christine Sun Kim, which attempt to fill in the silences and transitions between the poems, as well as moments inside and outside of them. Brilliant book. Raymond Antrobus is an incredibly talented poet, I'll definitely be looking out for more of his work. Beautiful, moving and lyrical his poems cover wide ranging topics with a deft hand, ancestry and history, family relationships and loss, racism and the violence of colonialism as well as language and the potential for miscommunication. There was a beautiful juxtaposition of vulnerability and strength in many of the poems that will stay with me for a long time. The recording was excellent with music that really drew me in and matched the feel and pacing of the poems. The closed captions, partially inspired by Deaf sound artist Christine Sun Kim, that moved the listener between poems were a really clever addition. I always love the deeper meaning you can feel when an author reads their own work and it was interesting to hear Antrobus give an intro to some of the poems with more details on what inspired him to write. I'm now looking forward to reading his first book The Perseverance.
