Annie Bot completely surprised me. Just when I thought I recognised a familiar trope or story beat, Sierra Greer would twist it into something unexpected, pulling me deeper into the narrative every time. It’s a story that feels deceptively familiar on the surface, yet constantly subverts expectations in clever, unsettling ways.
The characters are far richer than I anticipated. Annie is beautifully written—empathetic, complex, and painfully believable. The parallels to real domestic abuse are striking, and filtering those dynamics through the sci‑fi lens of programming adds a layer that’s both thought‑provoking and uncomfortable in the best way. It left me reflecting on how much of our own behaviour is shaped by the “programming” we carry.
Doug, who you could call the antagonist, is equally compelling. I found myself loathing him one moment, sympathising with him the next, and occasionally—even reluctantly—recognising parts of myself in him. That kind of emotional whiplash only works when a character is written with real depth, and Greer absolutely delivers.
Right up to the final pages, I genuinely couldn’t predict where the story was heading. It’s the kind of book that lingers long after you’ve finished it, nudging at your thoughts when you least expect it.
