I really don't know why Ngaio Marsh isn't more famous. This was a really cracking story with a selection of well-drawn characters, with a central detective whos actually a really lovely person, for once! She balances genuinely unexpected and at times shocking twists with realism, atmosphere, and sensitive observations of how people work. The dialogue is exceptionally well written. The reader so completely inhabits each character that when there's a rapid conversation with an interjection of maybe a couple of words only, you know exactly who it is, even with only a light change of timbre. Definitely not read with an intent to put the listener to sleep. Top marks all round, and I am fully looking forward to listening to the rest of this dynamite pairing.
