What to expect
The terrifying impact of global warming on vulnerable lives is laid bare in this gripping tale of survival from internationally bestselling author Steve Cole.
Gayla is trapped all alone when floodwater pours into her bedroom in a residential centre for kids with disabilities.
Junjun’s makeshift shack has been washed away in the flood and he needs to find medicine for his sister, who’s sick after drinking contaminated water.
At first these two young people seem to have little in common and pity each other, but as the waters continue to rise, they must work together to find a way to survive.
Critics Review
-
“Skilfully weaves together themes of global warming and inequality to address the critical issue of the climate crisis. This book not only educates young readers about the urgency of addressing climate change, but also encourages them to contemplate their role in building a sustainable future." – INIS Magazine
"Warmly and unsentimentaly told, the issues the two young people face are grippingly explored. The disproportionate impacts of climate change, and the effects of poverty and disability are intricately woven into an absorbing tale of two strong characters learning to help each other in order to survive. A page-turner with heart." – The School Librarian
"This is a story about poverty, disability and climate change. Steve Cole uses simple, clear language, making the characters' struggles feel real and urgent … A moving read that blends personal and global issues, giving readers a glimpse into the lives of those who are often forgotten." – Teen Titles
