Overall a mesmerising and thought provoking book. The unpalatable irritating start with Ellie almost made me give up on this book, although this was partly the narration style which was unendingly and fairly unvaryingly sneary. The central character isn't particularly likeable and that takes a while to get used to. The secondary character isn't supposed to be either, but somehow she's a relief and a treasure. I'm so glad I kept listening, partly thanks to this Brenda. It also is an inspired reminder that women aren't going to change the world for the better by being nice, compliant, and full of apology.
