What to expect
Hard Reset is a fast-paced, unpredictable, and clever take on the LitRPG genre, blending beloved sci-fi and apocalyptic themes to create an intricate new reality.
In this world, life begins in a coffin, cars float, a good ray gun is your best friend, and computer displays are activated with a flick of the wrist. It all feels so real, so right … and it all feels so wrong.
Some things remain the same in every reality: People with power crave more power. You’re free to live your life as long as you don’t challenge the status quo.
Tom doesn’t like the status quo. Never has.
Never will.
With a smart-mouthed computer program, a quick-shooting bounty hunter, and a pissed-off stranger as his allies, Tom takes on a corrupt, authoritarian government.
All the while, in another world, someone is studying his every move and thought. Tom may hold the key to humanity’s future.
If he can survive the game … without being reset.

I like this genre and found the book entertaining enough to finish it, and that's why I gave it 3 stars, and not 2.
Frankly, I thought that this was maybe this author's first book as it came across to me as someone who hasn't gotten into the flow of writing professionally yet. I kept cringing at some of the parts, and how amateur they sounded. Then I checked to see that he has written a number of books. Maybe I'm just spoiled by some very good authors recently? The book also finished with more of the story to follow, not unusual, but a bit short - 10hrs, 24mins. Obviously trying to get people to buy another follow on book. I don't have a problem at all with multi book sets, but don't do it at the expense of making your books poor value for money because they are short. This writer could learn from someone such as Brandon Sanderson, who also likes to write book series, but the reader could never feel like they had been "short changed" on any one book of his books! I noticed that this Author's other books are also pretty short. In fact this is one of his longer titles.
I was also disappointed in the narration in this book. Strange as I have heard this narrator do a very good job on other books, so maybe it was due to the direction he was given on how to portray the vocals? Not sure why
Anyway, in conclusion this book was certainly low down on my list of quality authors, but I did finish it, and was mildly entertained by it.ardhill 2026-08-27
