'A delightful piece of detective work' Mail on Sunday
'A very moreish read' Daily Telegraph
Canon Daniel Clement has suffered a secret humiliation and to recover takes respite at the monastery where he was a novice. But the monastery doesn't allow the break he needs, for tensions are building there too. There is a death at the monastery, and Daniel thinks it might be murder.
Meanwhile back at Champton, Daniel is the subject of village gossip, his mother Audrey is up to something again, there's trouble at the dress shop, trouble up at the big house, and the puppies are running riot.
Critics Review
-
Coles's feline wit and infectious enthusiasm for ecclesiastical trivia make for a very moreish read.
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
-
Written in Coles's customary wry style which owes much to the work of Alan Bennett.
DAILY MAIL
-
Richard writes beautifully... a delightful piece of detective work set in a religious order. The atmosphere is so intense, you can almost smell the incense on the page.
IRISH MAIL ON SUNDAY
-
A village that could rival Agatha Christie's St Mary Mead and the TV murder hotspot of Midsomer for its ever growing body count

This is the 3rd of his books in the series I’ve listened to. Whilst in my opinion the narration isn’t perfect, compared to the first book , its1000% better, but still a long way to go. With regards to the book, another good listen, might be me but think this one depicts Richard very well, and has you thinking on who done it, me never got it
Yes well worth the listen or read. Now waiting on the next oneNigel Tansley 2025-05-03 -

I love as always the characterisation in this series: the details; the humour and the surprises. But - I felt this book was padded out with far too much rambling and unnecessary ecclesiastical exploration and o ther descriptive passages. It is a shame as tbe plot got hidden and in parts I struggled to keep listening. Perhaps the flatness of the narration and odd tone added to this. It’s a shame as the first 2 in the series are 5 stars all round.
