Published in 1913, My Childhood is the first in an autobiographical trilogy by the Russian writer and five-time Nobel Prize-nominee Maxim Gorky. Painfully moving in places, the book tells of the experiences of a young boy who goes to live with his grandparents following the death of his father. Gorky’s depiction of 19th-century Russia through the eyes of his younger self is remarkable. As he recalls memories of his youth, contrasting themes and emotions are revealed, from barbaric joy to dark gloom, genuine cruelty and saint-like forbearance.

Critics Review

Gorky’s memoir of his childhood is unsparing in its stark and unromantic depiction of the heights of human kindness and the depths of human cruelty. Nicholas Boulton’s expressive performance of this classic of Russian literature and history is a perfect match of voice and text. Gorky, born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov in 1868, was orphaned at an early age and lived with his grandparents thereafter. His memoirs of this time form the basis for this work. Boulton has an amazingly versatile and expressive British accent. He skilfully gives the many characters in this production distinct and credible voices. His enunciation is perfect. He is just as adroit with the narrative. An excellent production.
