What to expect
It’s a warm summer’s evening in 1958 and a naïve 17-year-old is navigating post-war Bradford. Shirley Read is on a mission to break free from her affluent but over-bearing family. In a pub on the edge of the infamous Canterbury Estate, she falls under the gaze of a man as ruthless as he is enigmatic.
A member of the notorious Hudson family, Keith envelops a lovesick Shirley into his poverty-stricken underworld, a community which she is soon calling home. After forging a deep and personal bond with Keith’s two sisters, Annie and June, Shirley soon finds herself in unchartered territory and fighting for her own survival.
