What to expect
When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he’s too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there’s a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.
Critics Review
-
“At ease with the history and maverick social structure of his region, the author isn’t afraid to look on its dark side. Like his flinty hero, he doesn’t blink when the action wheels into the operating room for a bloody medical procedure or screeches down the highway on a high-speed car chase. As rugged as those mountains in the background, this virile series should only last as long.”
New York Times
-
“With enough twists and turns to keep the reader on chair’s edge, Mayor’s…action-packed tale includes interesting local history as seen by Gunther, an observant, appealing guide.”
Publishers Weekly
-
“An author to be reckoned with.”
