The symbiosis of author and narrator has rarely been so acutely realised as between Evelyn Waugh and Simon Cadell. Perfection. The narrator produces each voice so distinctly it's often difficult to believe there's only one voice reading this magnificent novel by an author whose sheer flair, beauty of language, biting wit and social, political and satirical observation were worthy of the Nobel Prize for Literature in my opinion. Scoop, as all of Waugh's novels, employs the language of its time and milieu which today hits jarringly but the glorious savagery of his writing is directed at the very systems which excused such language in its acceptance. Waugh is a literary genius of the first order.
