What to expect

Arthur Schopenhauer’s The Art of Literature is a lively, illuminating and brutally honest collection of essays on literary style and values, writers and critics, and the nature of genius. The volume is comprised of eight chapters: On Authorship, On Style, On the Study of Latin, On Men of Learning, On Thinking for Oneself, On Criticism, On Reputation and On Genius. Schopenhauer advises seclusion and independent thought, criticises Pliny’s reading habits, and explains the pitfalls of certain schools of thought and even virtues like modesty. His thought-provoking arguments, caustic wit and accessible style make this a must for any aspiring writer.

Critics Review

  • [L]ike an outfit that’s never in or out of fashion, the great German thinker speaks to a long tradition of arts and letters, rather than to the style of the moment. One example is his essay on the endurance of Latin. The overlying sense of permanence – in literature, history, culture and voice – is itself reassuring, and one of the chief pleasures of these thought-provoking essays.
