What to expect
David Fulmer, author of the acclaimed Storyville series, now brings us to the vibrant city of Philadelphia and the early days of its famous soul music.
Welterweight boxer Eddie Cero is out of the ring with an injury, but he still can't bear to see an unfair fight. In a Philadelphia alley, he steps in on two punks beating up an older man—and the victim, a private detective, buys Eddie a round and offers him a part-time gig. After a few days on the job, Eddie stumbles on a cold case involving the frontman for the Excels, one of Philadelphia's best soul acts. A music lover and big fan of the group, Eddie starts investigating the case out of curiosity, but the missing singer's talented sister draws him deep into a violent, twisted story of betrayal and intrigue, power and passion—all set to the beat of Philadelphia soul.

“[Fulmer] knows exactly what he is doing in a well-paced book that plants its central mystery at the intersection of pop-music history and racial politics in 1962 Philadelphia.”
“Absorbing.”
“Shamus-winner Fulmer delivers another compelling tale of music and murder…Fulmer excels at capturing the feel and textures of earlier decades…Drawn in by the immensely likable characters and rich, realistic story lines, readers will be eager to see where Fulmer goes next.”
“Characters and background make this one a winner.”
“An excellent choice for patrons who like a good dollop of music in their mysteries.”
“Mood is all here, and Fulmer nails it, the soul sounds providing the backbeat to a straight-ahead mystery involving backroom double-dealing in the record business.”
“Leisurely and atmospheric…Eddie’s exploits might do for the American Bandstand–era City of Brotherly Love what Fulmer’s Storyville series did for Jazz Age New Orleans.”
