Nessa: The Seeker

Jo: The Protector

Harriett: The Punisher

With newfound powers the time has come to take matters into their own hands…

Widowed Nessa lives alone in her house near the ocean. In the quiet hours, she hears voices belonging to the dead – who will only speak to her.

On the cusp of fifty Harriett’s marriage and career imploded, but her life is far from over – in fact, she’s undergone a stunning metamorphosis.

Jo spent years at war with her body. The rage that arrived with menopause felt like the last straw – until she discovers she’s able to channel it.

Guided by voices only Nessa can hear, the trio discover the abandoned body of a teenage girl. The police have written off the victim. But the women have not. Their own investigations lead to more bodies, and a world of wealth where the rules don’t apply – and the realisation that laws are designed to protect villains, not the vulnerable.

Now three women will avenge the innocent and punish the guilty. IT’S TIME.

I have never hated a book more! I think stories that explore patriarchal power structures and how they subjugate and objectivy women can be incredibly interesting and powerful - if you want a first class example of one, read A Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires. I also love love love stories that centre women at an age where they are usually pushed out of the media landscape - again, Souther Book Club comes to mind or even Killers Of A Certain Age. This book however explored nothing. It had simply decided from the beginning All Men Evil and All Women Powerful and repeteaded it ad nauseam. This wasn't interesting this was wholly construed black and white storytelling with no imagination. And I mean, I really liked the premise. I picked this book on purpose. But I hated every second from the first quarter onward and it is a long book. To be fair (spoiler) we break with this premise once at the end. One woman is in fact not "good" but implicated in the men's scheme because it gave her power. Doesn't that sound intriguing? Mightn't it be very interesting to explore how women sometimes support masculine power structures because it benefits them in specific ways? Well it could have been but here it was the most trite, cartoony-evil, boring-a**-shit I have ever seen. Save your money and especially your time and read something else!

Not sure what I was expecting, but I was blown away by this book. The character development was brilliant, each with their unique personalities and ‘abilities.’ Harriett was my favourite though!
The story line was all consuming, I couldn’t put my phone down and walked around with my ear phones in for three days entranced by the story as it unfolded. There is such an obvious appeal to highlight recent news events and tie them the story, you almost feel as though this is the revenge you would like to employ. But I think that cheapens the book - THIS story is a raucous romp of a book that every woman whoever worked in Corp America must read!
I’ve recommended The Change to all the women in my life so they get the same laughter, joy and satisfaction from from this great story!
