David Rintoul delivers a defining performance of Dumas' timeless tale.
Revenge, justice, and reinvention collide in this electrifying classic.
The Count of Monte Cristo follows Edmond Dantès, a young sailor betrayed by those he trusts and condemned to a life he doesn't deserve. After a daring escape and the discovery of a vast hidden treasure, he transforms himself into the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo—and sets out to rewrite his destiny. I read this book a long time ago (so long, that I don’t remember if it was print or audio), and recently watched the recent eight-part TV production and decided it was time to refresh my memory, because it was clear that the TV version was based on the book, but took liberties. My impressions of the book and the Count himself are different this time around. Though I still think the book is great, I think a notch less than I did the first time. The problems with the Count’s vengeance was more blatant to me this time - I actually am quite sympathetic to his desire for vengeance. Perhaps it had to be less contrived and more direct, but then the plot would not have been as interesting. The narrator David Rintoul (the version I purchased) was superb and worth buying. I first borrowed a popular version from the library and found the narration dry. There were less expensive versions than David Rintoul (though it was still quite reasonable on XigXag), but I think his was worth every penny. His is quite recent - 2025, which probably explains why people don’t mention it so much.
