Another coming of age fable. The beautiful writing and heavy themes (life/death/depression) lift it from being a children’s book. I enjoyed it, although not as much as the Tombs of Atuan.

The narration was way too much for my taste, especially in contrast with the simpler style of book 2. The normal narration sounded like a bit too much like Smaug from the Hobbit (eg the word ‘dark’ is pronounced with three Rs and two Ks) and the choice of accents were a bit irritating (e.g the stupid and drugged up simple villager had a thick and bad West Country accent)
