What to expect
'It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is that they can't see the problem.'
Published in 1911,
The Innocence of Father Brown is the very first collection of short stories featuring one of G.K. Chesterton's most iconic characters: amateur detective, and devout Catholic, Father Brown.
Father Brown, a modest, mild-mannered priest with a sharp intellect and even sharper sense of the human condition, is thrown into a series of mysteries which often baffle both his peers and the authorities. Despite his humble appearance, Father Brown can easily detect falsehoods, see through disguises and defy tampered logic to get to the truth. From cases of theft, fraud and murders with no apparent weapon, Brown remains calm in the face of evil time and time again, utilising compassion, empathy and keen intuition. Captivating, pacey and packed with unexpected turns,
The Innocence of Father Brown is Chesterton's clever reimagining of crime fiction as a vehicle for moral reflection. This audiobook edition is brilliantly ready by Nicholas Boulton.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874 – 1936) was an English novelist, philosopher, journalist and critic. A Christian apologist, he is famed for creating the fictional priest-detective Father Brown. His writing was also renowned for his sense of humour: known as 'the prince of paradox', Chesterton often turned common sayings upside down. Admired by several of his literary contemporaries, Chesterton's work is still widely read today.
