Great storytelling and a great tale to tell. What an inspirational place was the Ospedale Della Pieta where countless unwanted baby girls were taught to play musical instruments and sing creating one of the 18th century's most famous orchestras. Anna Maria della Pieta was a real person and this is a fictionalised account of her mostly teenage years in Venice, where she was taught the violin by Antonio Vivaldi. Incidentally we discover that some of his most famous works such as the Four Seasons and La Stravaganza were actually composed collaboratively with these orphan girls. And the depiction of Venice was well crafted. I recommend this as an uplifting read. Personally I found the narration annoying because there was frequent over emphasis or an over dramatic emphasis on words. Good stories tell themselves and the best narration is to let that happen

Beautiful historical novel. Full of colours, determination and ambition. Reminded me slightly of "The Glassmaker" - probably because they both take place in past Venice.

A great story, beautifully narrated by Emilia Clarke. I loved the story putting female musicians and composers front and centre. The author paints a really vivid picture of Venice in the 18th century. At times the storytelling is reminiscent of Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell, so if you enjoyed that book, I'm sure you'll like this one!
