Critics Review

This collection of stories is told in the lively tradition of an oral storyteller by narrator Sagar Arya. He tells these tales of love and separation with humour and gravitas, evoking a range of emotions for which the author’s writing is well known. Postmen, shopkeepers, fathers, and young children are a few of the many characters that people these narratives. Arya captures the musical rhythms of South Asian-accented English throughout the dialogue. This adds to the authenticity of the listening experience because the collection represents the daily lives of Indians in the twentieth century. Recounting the experiences of characters who span different classes, ages and genders, Arya succeeds in bringing this classic of Indian literature to new audiences.
