What to expect
A tank-bred axolotl, Zephyr, finds himself in a fight for survival between warring axolotl factions in Book 2 of the New York Times bestselling series. This action-packed adventure is perfect for fans of Warrior Cats, with 24 black-and-white illustrations throughout.
Zephyr isn’t out to make friends. After a grueling escape from an axolotl breeding facility, all he cares about is being reunited with his sister, Luna. He places his trust in Neptune, a wise tiger salamander who promises to look for her. But the search is fraught, and Neptune refuses to venture above the surface at nightfall.
Feeling betrayed, Zephyr sets off on his own and soon encounters Jasper, an ambitious axolotl hungry for power. Zephyr quickly finds himself embroiled in a fight between some axolotls who believe regeneration is the key to survival and others who want to evolve into salamanders and roam free. The struggle for power is vicious, and there are many more dangers waiting for them around the lake.
This thrilling adventure is complete with legendary battles, incredible alliances, and a moving search for belonging at the heart of it all.

Praise for The Last Immortals
"The life-or-death action reads like a mystery-crime mob thriller while weaving together ethical and moral themes…. Middle grade students will enjoy Zephyr’s journey, which combines adventure, ecological themes, and the universal importance of family, friends, and belonging into a compelling narrative.”—School Library Journal
"A captivating series starring today’s trendiest amphibian. Brooks keeps the narrative moving briskly, balancing the harsh realities of nature with humor and camaraderie. The axolotl’s remarkable regenerative abilities add biological intrigue to the tale, while themes of chosen family versus blood ties give emotional weight to Ace’s journey from helpless hatchling to determined hero. Dorman’s illustrations enhance the underwater setting, making lake-bottom life feel vivid and immediate."—Kirkus Reviews
"This gripping, fact-saturated series starter is an easy recommendation for avid Warriors fans. This book teaches young readers about the importance of an ecological balance as well as the power of compassion and believing in one’s ingenuity.”—Booklist
"An adventurous beginning to a series that both feeds the current axolotl craze and touches on important topics, such as friendship, family, allegiances, and betrayals ... includes many delightful illustrations perfect for middle grade animal fantasy readers.”—School Library Journal
