What to expect

'Love is natural; but surely pity and faithfulness and memory are natural too. And they would live in me still, and punish me if I did not obey them.'
An epic novel spanning an entire decade, The Mill on the Floss is George Eliot's timeless exploration of identity, class and desire.
A powerful coming-of-age narrative, Eliot's novel follows Maggie Tulliver, a bright, passionate girl based by the River Floss in rural Lincolnshire. Grappling with her strict family's expectations, social judgement and her own inner turmoil, Maggie longs for freedom and understanding. Alongside her pragmatic and reserved brother, Tom, she faces moral dilemmas that test loyalty pride and, ultimately, forgiveness. Written with exquisite vividness and profound psychological insight, Eliot investigates the tension between individual ideals and social duty, crafting a poignant tale about childhood, sacrifice and the consequences of choices that can never be undone.
George Eliot (1819 – 1880), the penname of Mary Ann Evans, was an English novelist, poet and translator. She is often regarded as one of the key writers of the Victorian era, and is renowned for her realism, narrative voice and rich descriptions of the English countryside. Deeply influenced by the liberal and intellectual circles of the time, Eliot's work was often politically astute. She remains one of the most influential writers to this day.
