Critics Review
-
A highly enjoyable tale . . . this book evokes its period brilliantly
Sunday Times
-
A historical saga of such breadth and density . . . Follett succeeds brilliantly in combining hugeness and detail to create a novel imbued with the rawness, violence and blind faith of the era
Sunday Express
-
Enormous and brilliant . . . this mammoth tale seems to touch all human emotion - love and hate, loyalty and treachery, hope and despair. This is truly a novel to get lost in

The historical side of this book was immense. The vivid description of medieval England and its people, both good and bad was superb. The only downside was Mr Folletts, 1970s 'give em a bit of slap and tickle to keep em interested.' obsession. That was really not needed and just annoyed me. If it was written today by a great writer I would like to think, if it was included, then a more intelligent narrative would be used instead. Apart from that it was a good book and I did enjoy it.
