This is only the second Heyer crime novel I have experienced and, in the main, I enjoyed the story. I didn't enjoy the obviously-too-stupid-to-be-an-inspector characterisation of the local bobby, or borderline racist caricature of the Mexican character. (Unfortunately, much as I love Heyer's books, I do find the ableism, racism and antisemitism in them rather worrying). In the case of this book, the offence is compounded by Edsel's reading. The local policemen and the Mexican dancer have been given comic voices so ableist and so racist that there's no bearing it! I am absolutely sure that that wasn't the impression (this is the 21st Century in the UK after all) but is was the effect.
