Bloomsbury presents The Untold Story of Scott Hoying, Pentatonix Star: My Son's Journey to Find Harmony in Music and Life by Connie Hoying, read by Jennifer Woodward with Foreward by Scott Hoying.

This book depicts the life and career of Scott Hoying, Grammy Award-winning cofounder of Pentatonix, as seen by his mother Connie. More than just a book about her son’s life, Connie tells a heartfelt story of perseverance, dedication to music, LGBTQ+ acceptance, and supportive parenting.
Connie mixes personal experiences about raising Scott and his two siblings with an account of his life—from Scott's childhood in Texas and coming out in high school to meteoric rise to fame with Pentatonix and, finally, married life. As a child, Scott was a musical prodigy. Connie shares what influenced him as a kid, his early musical successes and failures, and the ways she fostered a creative environment along with hard-won lessons as a mother of three. She candidly recounts Scott’s coming out process in high school, including her initial mistakes and concerns along the way but also her journey to understanding and allyship. She details the unlikely formation and explosion of Pentatonix—from their start on The Sing-Off and initial setbacks to incredible success—as well as Scott’s solo work and the duo act Superfruit with Mitch Grassi.
Connie concludes with a reflection on the wonderful, authentic life Scott and his husband Mark Manio have created for themselves and the support & choices that led up to that moment. Along with a foreword by Scott, the book also includes a QR code to an original, previously unreleased song “Pray” which covers themes related to Scott's coming out story.

Critics Review

  • An inspiring new memoir that blends maternal insight with musical legacy.

    OutClique

  • Connie Hoying’s new book, The Untold Story of Scott Hoying, Pentatonix Star, offers a raw, nostalgic, and refreshingly candid look at the life of her son—from a piano-playing Texas kid to a queer icon in the making … She’s telling a story about what it really means to love your child—completely, imperfectly, and fiercely.

    Instinct

  • A touching story of a mom who is there for her child. Knowing Scott since he was 12 (and I was 13), before we knew and accepted ourselves fully but loved music, I have watched him grow into the amazing human he is today—and what a special mom he’s had to support and inspire him through all of it.

    David Archuleta

  • A powerful book. When people first become parents, they often envision a life for their children that ultimately aligns with their own experiences. But as children grow, they inevitably forge their own paths, ones that may challenge assumptions and invite others to see the world in new ways. For Scott’s mom, learning that her son is gay was one such invitation—a call to examine her fears, but most of all, her love.

  • This book is for every parent navigating the emotions and challenges of supporting a child who has just come out to them. It definitely tugs at your heartstrings.

    Queer Eye

  • An incredible window into the beautiful family that guided Scott and his sisters to be as successful and happy as they are. I had the privilege to sing Scott down the aisle when he married Mark, and I officiated their gorgeous union together. I also had the privilege to meet Scott’s whole family and see exactly where his strong sense of love, self-worth, and joy came from. I felt it right away—it was his mother. You know someone is so loved when they are so good at loving.

    "A Thousand Years" and Lovestrong

  • Wow! I really learned about the experiences and influences that shaped Scott into the person he is today—from his deep-rooted love of music and the challenges he faced along the way.

"Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman

  • The book’s value is not just in its recounting of Scott’s success in the music industry but also of his success as an individual, and because of the example of what parental love, acceptance, and support can do for a child.

    Library Journal

  • Emotional, compelling, and extremely intimate.
