I loved this book. It had so much resonance for me. Barbara kingsolver is the only author I have read multiple times.

Brilliantly written and narrated by the author, this is an engrossing story of a family, with a parallel tale of nineteenth century residents of the same street. It explores how we seek 'shelter' or security, and how we respond when the stability of a house, or the foundations of rigid beliefs, are threatened. Through the relational dynamics of the contemporary family, along with those of the earlier counterparts, generational and marital differences in response to such threats, plus conflicts between colleagues, are played out. Ultimately, this novel questions what it is we need to survive in a rapidly changing world. It is deeply thought provoking but not in a clinical way and can be enjoyed as much as a family saga as a novel of ideas
